Inter High School Choral Competitions
On its 51st foundation anniversary, our School, the CENTRAL COLLEGES
OF THE PHILIPPINES (of "CCP") will launch its annual Inter High
School Choral Competitions on Saturday, February 25, 2006 at 4:00 p.m.
in the quadrangle of our main campus at 52 Aurora Blvd., Quezon City.
The main thrust of the event is to provide a window of opportunity
whereby the musical prowess so ingrained in the Filipino soul can be
intensified and refined and to build convivial links among students
who are musically disposed.
The Chairman of the Board of Judges will be Mr. Jonathan M. Velasco,
the conductor of the Ateneo Chamber Singers. At the age of 19, he
joined and became the assistant choirmaster of the world renowned
Philippine Madrigal Singers. Following this, he spent four years at
the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule in Germany, where he finished his
music studies with distinction. He sang with the World Youth Choir
from 1990 to 1991 and assumed the post of Principal Conductor in 1996,
2001 and 2002, the first Asian and Filipino to do so. Mr. Velasco
founded the Philippine Chamber Choir in 1998 and was the Principal
Conductor of the San Miguel Master Chorale, the country's first and
only professional choir, from 2001 to 2003. He has given numerous
workshops and choral clinics around the world in countries like
Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Germany, and the Netherlands.
He has served as juror at the 2nd Choral Olympics in Busan, Korea,
the 9th International Choir Competition in Budapest, Hungary, the 7th
International Choir Contest of Flanders-Maasmechelen in Belgium, and
the 35th Tolosa International Choral Competition in Tolosa, Spain.
He was guest conductor of the Ateneo College Glee Club in 2000 and
2001, when they won top prizes in choral competitions across Europe.
The other judges will be Ms. Perlita Reyes, Mr. Emmanuel Miranda and
Mr. Christopher Borela, all active members of the Philippine Madrigal
Singers.
The Glee Club of CCP will perform during the intermission periods but
being the host, will not participate in the Competition.
