A Letter From the President

18 April 2010

Dear Freshmen,

Welcome to CENTRAL COLLEGES OF THE PHILIPPINES, your Alma Mater for the rest of your life.

All of you are freshmen and have just graduated from High School. Most people generally agree that except for the first 2 years of married life, the happiest part of their lives was in High School. Maybe that’s true but that can’t be universally true for all people. There are exceptions and your school, CCP will try its best to make you the exception.

Of course, you will have to take your studies more seriously than you did during the last four years, but that is to be expected. Your whole future will  depend on how hard you study in College.

From the very start I have to lay stress that the quality of your life will depend on it. Not only that, but more importantly, the quality of the food, the clothing, the  shelter, the friends, the environment and the very HAPPINESS of your children and their children will depend on it.  If you have not met your soul mate yet, you probably will and soon. Most of you will be married within five years after graduation. That’s not very far away. And soon after that, you will have your own children and that’s the time that you will realize that I wasn’t kidding about the importance of serious and hard study.

Please don’t wait until that time to take it to mind because then it will be too late and you certainly don’t want regrets.

From the very start though, we want to help you become happy but to achieve that, you’ll just have to take my word that it’s absolutely essential that you do two things from now on:

First you have to talk in English all the time that you’re in School. You already are very proficient in Filipino and you do not have to prove your patriotism by speaking it exclusively. There is nothing unnationalistic about learning another language perfectly. Most of the heroes of our country spoke either Spanish or English competently.

We must face the fact that the international language is now English. All other countries whether it be Korea, China, Russia, everywhere are sending out their kids abroad to take cram courses in English. Even before graduation, you will need to be able to think in English so that you can compete with graduates from the most exclusive schools in job interviews for the more desirable jobs. It will be too late for you to translate your Tagalog thoughts into English before you answer the questions of the impatient job interviewers. If you dream of working abroad, you will first have to prove that you can communicate with the natives of the country where you desire to work. You cannot expect foreigners to learn Tagalog so that they can communicate with you. It has to be the other way around. After all, it is you who want to work in their country.

In order to make our graduates competitive, the language of instruction in CCP is not Taglish but English. Unless you understand and speak English expertly, you will not be able to learn much in School. If you don’t understand the language of instruction, you will not understand what is being taught.

Next and just as important, you will want to be nice. What I mean is that, to be happy, you should have outstanding people skills so that you become attractive to most  people no matter what you look like. And that can only be achieved by being a genuinely GOOD person. The fastest way to give people that impression is to have good manners. That may have been pounded on you while you were in grade 1 and by this time, you should be perfect at it. If not, please take the time to read and follow the googled advise contained in the Annex of this letter about how to behave, how to be interesting, how to be liked, how to make friends at a new School, how to be popular, how to build self confidence and how to be happy.

I can’t promise to solve your problem to your satisfaction, but I do promise to consider it.

Sorry though, I can’t help you out with grades. You really will have to solve that problem yourself.

Again welcome and have a great time in CCP.

Sincerely,
