The transformation of Central Colleges of the Philippines into an English-speaking
campus drew varied reactions from members of the school community. A number of
CCP's constituents who welcomed it warmly, thought that it was a timely move
toward globalization and a good means to attract students.
Even as the push-and-pull controversy over the conversion of the school into an
English-speaking campus rages, its president, Atty. Crispino P. Reyes, must be
congratulated for his bold move, an initial step to keep our students apace with
global trends. He must have thought of preparing them this early for the cutthroat
competition that they will have to face after graduation when they are going to
look for jobs.
In connection with this move, the Speak-English Committee was formed. This body
came up with a program of activities geared toward the improvement of students'
fluency in English oral communication.
The Centralistas are literally immersed in English as this language is used not
only as a medium of instruction in all classes, except Filipino classes, but also
as a medium of communication in every corner of CCP's main and extension campuses.
Business is transacted in all offices only in English. Reminders to speak English
at all times are posted around. Monitoring of English use in all departments is
also done. The office clerks, librarians, safety officers, janitors, and other
personnel are not spared from the implementation of this program.
The President has even written a letter to parents to ensure that CCP students
will be totally immersed in the language.
With all the members of the CCP community working together to help convert this
school into an English-speaking campus, there will come a time when CCP will become
a natural setting for ESL learners, our students, who are the primary beneficiaries
of this program.
The success of this program depends on our collective effort and commitment to sustain
it no matter what obstacles come our way.
